Tim Burton’s adaptation of the classic tale, starring Johnny Depp generated about 70% of its opening weekend business from theaters with 3-D screens. It easily beat the premiere of Avatar and has now set a record for the biggest winter opening.

The movie “Alice in Wonderland” was shown at aboyt 220 more 3-D theaters than Avatar. As returns came in, it became clear that audiences generally preferred to see Disney’s movie with the advanced technology like 3-D despite the high ticket price.

3-D has accounted for an increasingly large percentage of ticket sales over the last three months for the movie of James Camron, “Avatar” with 2.6 dollars. IN the case of Alice in Wonderland, that would certainly be too difficult to beat because this coming march 26, 3-D screens will switch to DreamWorks Animation’s “How to Train Your Dragon”.

The villages near the Kovancilar town were among the affected areas. The worst-hit area was the village of Okcular where 17 persons were killed and a number of homes crumbled into piles of dirt.

According to reports, around 100 people were injured in the quake which occurred at around 4:32 a.m. in Elazig province. The earthquake caught many people in their sleep. The initial quake was followed by 30 more aftershocks, the strongest measuring 5.5.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies on top of the North Anatolian fault. In 1999, two powerful earthquakes struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

In 2007, an earthquake measuring 5.7 damaged buildings in Elazig, briefly trapping a woman under debris. In 2003, an earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitude collapsed a school dormitory in the neighboring province of Bingol province, killing 83 children.

A Met Police spokesman said: “The man was pronounced dead at the scene, family have been informed. Officers are investigating.”

The TV presenter Kristian Digby, 32 is believed to have suffocated while starving himself of oxygen for sexual arousal.

For those who want to know the meaning of auto-erotic asphyxiation, it is a form of sexual masochism in which oxygen flow to the brain is reduced, as by controlled strangulation or suffocation, in order to enhance the pleasure of masturbation.

One of the world’s most powerful earthquakes in a century battered Concepcion, Chile on Saturday, killing at least 214 people, knocking down buildings and triggering a tsunami that threatened Pacific coastlines as far away as Hawaii and Russia.
Buildings caught fire, bridges collapsed and debris blocked streets across swathes of central Chile, but the initial death toll was relatively low from a quake packing many times more power than the one that devastated Haiti last month.

A 15-storey building collapsed in Concepcion, the closest major city to the epicenter, and overturned cars lay scattered below a fallen overpass in the capital Santiago. Telephone and power lines went down, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage and loss of life.

The government said at least 214 people were killed in the 8.8-magnitude quake, which struck at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. EST), sending people rushing from their beds and onto the streets in fear, hugging each other and crying.

“It came in waves and lasted so long. Three minutes is an eternity. We kept worrying that it was getting stronger, like a terrifying Hollywood movie,” said Santiago housewife Dolores Cuevas.

One emergency official said the number of deaths was unlikely to increase dramatically, and a U.S. Geological Survey researcher attributed the low toll to Chile’s solid building standards.

But it was the fifth-largest earthquake since 1900 and dealt a blow to the economy and infrastructure of the world’s No. 1 copper producer and one of Latin America’s most developed and stable countries.

“This will be a major blow to the country’s infrastructure; there has been major damage to roads, airports, which are now suspended, ports and also in housing,” Chilean President-elect Sebastian Pinera said.

The quake halted operations at two oil refineries and two major copper mines and the government said an estimated half a million homes were severely damaged.

President Michelle Bachelet said a huge wave hit the Juan Fernandez islands, an archipelago where Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk was marooned in the 18th century, inspiring the novel Robinson Crusoe.

“There was a series of waves that got bigger and bigger, which gave people time to save themselves,” pilot Fernando Avaria told TVN television by telephone from the main island. Three people were killed and four missing there, he said.

Tsunami warnings were posted around the Pacific, including the U.S. state of Hawaii, Japan and Russia. The U.S. Navy said it was pulling six ships out of Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor ahead of the tsunami, which was expected to hit the island at heights of up to 8 feet.

Unusually big waves battered Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, where residents were moved to higher ground as a precaution.

Bachelet said residents were evacuated from coastal areas of Chile’s remote Easter Island, a popular tourist destination in the Pacific famous for its towering Moai stone statues.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 70 miles northeast of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles.

An earthquake of magnitude 8 or over can cause “tremendous damage,” the USGS says. The January 12 quake that devastated Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince and killed well over 200,000 people was measured as magnitude 7.0.

DAMAGE TO CAPITAL, MAJOR MINES

Chile’s capital of Santiago, about 200 miles north of the epicenter, was also badly hit. The international airport was closed for at least 24 hours as the quake destroyed passenger walkways and shook glass out of doors and windows.

“I thought I’d blown a tire … but then I saw the highway moving like it was a piece of paper and I realized it was something much worse,” said one man who was forced to abandon his car on a wrecked highway overpass.

Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, suspended operations at its El Teniente and Andina mines, but reported no major damage and said it expected the mines to be up and running in the “coming hours.”

Production was halted at the Los Bronces and El Soldado copper mines, owned by Anglo American Plc, but Chile’s biggest copper mine, Escondida, was operating normally.

Chile produces about 34 percent of world supply of copper, which is used in electronics, cars and refrigerators.

Local television showed a building in flames in Concepcion, one of Chile’s largest cities with around 670,000 inhabitants. Some residents looted pharmacies and a collapsed grains silo, hauling off bags of wheat, television images showed.

At least 269 prisoners took advantage of the quake to escape from a prison about 250 miles south of Santiago, police said. Twenty-eight of the inmates were captured and three shot.

Broken glass and chunks of concrete and brick were strewn across roads and several strong aftershocks rattled jittery residents in the hours after the initial quake.

“It was like we were being shaken around in a box,” said Claudia Rosario, a 27-year-old receptionist in Temuco, about 175 miles south of Concepcion. She said residents there were without water and electricity.

“But thank God it was just small things (broken). It could have been worse.”

There were blackouts in parts of Santiago. Emergency officials said buildings in the historic quarters of two southern cities, mainly made of adobe, had been badly damaged and local radio said three hospitals had partially collapsed.

The magnitude 9.5 earthquake of 1960, the largest earthquake worldwide in the last 200 years, spawned a tsunami that engulfed the Pacific Ocean. About 1,600 lives were lost in Chile and the tsunami took another 200 lives in Japan, Hawaii and the Philippines

In 1960, Chile was hit by a 9.5-magnitude earthquake, one of the biggest ever recorded. It devastated the city of Valdivia, killed 1,655 people, and sent a tsunami that continued as far as Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines.

Saturday’s quake shook buildings as far away as Argentina’s Andean provinces of Mendoza and San Juan. A series of strong aftershocks rocked Chile’s coastal region from Valdivia in the south to Valparaiso, about 500 miles to the north.

President Barack Obama called Bachelet and said the United States stood ready to help Chile. He also urged Americans to heed warnings about a possible tsunami that could affect the U.S. West Coast and Hawaii.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was due to visit Chile on Tuesday on a Latin American tour.

Going on a movie date for Valentine’s Day is one of the usual things that couples do, probably because it’s relatively cheap and entertaining (well that depends on the movie). But if you don’t want to squeeze into a huge Valentine crowd, why not just stay at home and bring the movies in it?

Probably you’ve heard of this Valentine idea a hundred times before. But hey, Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean you have to do something grandiose to impress your significant other. Have a movie marathon. Just think of ways on how to spice up this V-day!

I’m such a huge fun of romantic flicks, either comedy or drama. So as a Valentine treat, let me give you my own list of romantic films that would make you think that love, indeed, is a beautiful thing.

1. Serendipity (2001) – John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale star in this romantic comedy about how fate brought two people together despite the circumstances.

2. My Sassy Girl (2001) – Jun Ji-hyun and Cha Tae-hyun plays the lead roles. This is a story of a young man named Gyun-woo who fell in love with a bizzare girl (yes, the girl’s name wasn’t mentioned in the entire film) who had a hard time getting over with her boyfriend who died from drowning. The movie’s a bit comical but the latter part would make you cry. It’s better than the film’s American version.

3. A Lot Like Love (2005) – The story of two individuals whose lives were intertwined by lust, friendship, and eventually, romance. The movie has great soundtrack and tagline, too: there’s nothing better than a great romance to ruin a perfectly good friendship. Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet starred in this movie.

4. Only You (1994) – I saw this movie a few years after it has been shown on the big screen. It’s about a woman named Faith (Marissa Tomei) who was told by a gypsy and an ouija board that she would marry a guy named Damon Bradley. And so she went in search for the man of her dreams. Robert Downey, Jr. stars opposite Tomei.

5. Pretty Woman (1990) – I just love how Richard Gere and Julia Roberts portrayed their roles. It’s one of those rich-guy-guy-fell-in-love-with-a-hooker movies but with a funny formula that could make you both laugh and fall in love.

6. The Notebook (2004) – This is the kind of story that stands through the test of time. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams played the roles of Noah and Allie whose love story started in the 1940s. It has the you-and-me-against-the-world plot until fate brought them apart and then back together. It has a sad ending though.

7. Twilight (2008) – Okay, so teens would react why I had it in this spot and not on the top. At least it made its way on my list. The whole world knows about the story of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. I’m a fan of the book series, which are better than the movie adaptations.

8. The Prince & Me (2004) – I like this one. Who doesn’t want the fairy tale kind of movie? It’s about a pre-med student (Julia Stiles) and a Danish prince who went through the odds of having a relationship with someone with a different social status.

9. Wall-E (2008) – Who says love is only for humans? Well, even without a heart and a hypothalamus, Wall-E made me shed some tears in a delightful way.

10. City of Angels (1998) – The beauty of love is having to share your world with the one who actually means the world to you. Cheesy. I love this film and has since then fell in love with Nicholas Cage. Opposite Meg Ryan, the two gave out a heartfelt performance that transcends from the movie screen to your heart.

There are a lot more romantic movies that would either make you laugh or cry. This Valentine’s Day, rediscover love in different forms, in different faces. My cousin posted this in her Facebook wall: Join the revolution. Fall in love. Lets.

So we’ve had lots of gaming consoles introduced to the world since 1970s. From Atari to Nintendo to Sega to Sony PlayStation X-Box to Wii and then the XaviXPORT, the list goes on for decades of games and every boy’s entertainment source.

Gaming addicts went gaga over new consoles being released from time to time. I don’t have much enthusiasm to share until the release of PSP. Well, for gadget and gaming fanatics, these consoles mean the world to them, at some point. And where does the gaming PC stand in here?

This morning, I encountered an article that sort of promotes the efficiencies of gaming PC. The article talked about the reasons why you still need a gaming PC – its versatility, cheaper game downloads, online games compatibility, and the efficiency of bringing it anywhere you want. Oh, I’m talking about laptops here.

The article also mentioned this new gaming laptop, the ALIENWARE M11x. Sounds a bit out-of-this-world but this could be a gaming addict’s new bestfriend. ALIENWARE M11x has 8.5 hours battery life and weighs about 4.5 pounds. Manufactured by DELL, this ultra mobile gaming laptop boasts of High Definition features in its 11.6″ screen.

ALIENWARE M11x Specs:

Screen size: 11.6 inches
Screen resolution: Other (1366 x 768)
Aspect ratio: 16:9
Screen type: LCD (Color, Backlit)
Screen surface: Glossy
Processor make: Intel
CPU family: Core2 Duo (mobile)
CPU model: SU7300
Processor speed: 1.3 GHz
Number of cores: Dual-core
Cache size: 3 MB L2 cache
System RAM: 2 GB
Hard drive(s): 160 GB (total)
Dimensions: 1.29 inches (h), 11.25 inches (w), 9.19 inches (d)
Weight: 4.39 pounds
Maximum battery life: Up to 8.5 hours
The cover picture depicts Lindsay Lohan in a Christ-like figure, draped in a white robe, posing with her arms outstretched, Crucifixion-style. Lohan wears a crown of thorns atop her platinum-blond extensions.

As is often the case when religious figures are depicted in popular media, the French magazine cover is already drawing fire from Christian thought-leaders.

According to the head of the Catholic League, Bill Donohue, Lindsay Lohan photo is inappropriate and its timing is offensive. (Catholicism’s most sacred season begins next Wednesday — Ash Wednesday — with the start of Lent, the annual period of pentinence and abstinence that leads up to the Easter celebration.
