This article is fitted for those who are just new on Facebook. But if you haven’t been managing your Facebook account for quite a while, this could also be benificial.
Here are my 10 most important Facebook facts and features you should know and should be using (or doing).
Friend Invites
Invite your friends and family members, who are of course in Facebook, to build your social network faster. Find old friends, grade school classmates you haven’t seen for decades, and even old flames you wanted to befriend again. Keeping in touch with them may seem nostalgic but is really a great way to retrieve long-lost friendships.
Suggested Friends and Friend Requests
You have the option to accept these suggestions and requests. It’s okay to ignore an invitation. Really. Or if you think that’s uncool, manage your friends by creating lists or categories for your Facebook friends. This way, only those you really know could see you updates and full profile.
Privacy Settings
Why is this important? Categorizing your friends is just one way of using privacy settings. With Facebook privacy settings, you can control who can see your profile, who can write on your wall, who can contact you, who can see your personal information, and how much information you can share on applications. Here you can also block list people you wouldn’t want to be friends with.
Your Online Profile
I read this line somewhere a week ago: “If you wouldn’t want people to know you, don’t use Facebook”. I also can’t remember who said it. Fill your online profile with real information (again, you can control this with the privacy settings) about yourself because a possible employer might be searching you on the web and I’m sure you wouldn’t want him/her to learn something about you that isn’t real.
Write on Walls
Make this a habit. Write on your friends’ walls, letting them know that you remember them from time to time. But refuse writing personal information or facts like mobile number, account password (of course not), or private nothings you wouldn’t want the entire world to know.
Your Status
Be interesting and leave a little privacy for your self. Avoid saying “Jane Doe is about to sleep” and then the following morning, “Jane Doe is now awake”. Who would be interested in your updates if you keep posting these kinds of status? Don’t give status that would seem like an everyday thing. Also, don’t update status that you should rather keep to yourself, status that are explicit and should be censored. There are seven-year old kids who might bump into your account somewhere.
Tag Friends
There are some who gets annoyed being tagged in an album or a photo if they can’t actually see themselves on it. But there are some who see it cool being tagged whether on photos or notes. Just be careful on the photos that you post. Make sure these won’t offend the friend you want to tag.
Favorite Music on Your Info Page
Letting Facebook people know the music you listen to is one of the simplest ways to get friends. If someone sees your favorite music or artist and you have something in common, that’s a good start of gaining a new friend. He might also suggest people who share the same music interest as yours, just how social networks are made for.
Pages
Make a page for your business, you school organization, a campaign you’ve started that needs support, etc. Facebook is also a great venue for marketing your products or services. If you’re a public figure, gain popularity on Facebook! Promote your advocacies and everything in a medium that won’t cost you any amount.
Events
I don’t use this often but starting today, and because of my line of work, I know I should be taking advantage of this functional Facebook feature. Invite friends to your events without the hassle of dialling all their contact numbers. You can also save time, effort, and money instead of sending card invites of your upcoming party.
